Pineapple whoopsy cake

Why is it every time I'm supposed to make something for work, I wait until the morning of to make it?. I'm attempting to make pinapple upside-down cake this morning--except I screwed up already. I was supposed to put the brown sugar and the pineapples on the bottom of the pan before I put the batter in. Doh. Guess I'm gonna get some cream cheese icing and make it just a pinapple cake. LOL.

Twilight Zone

I think this is one of the most bizarre, unexplainable things I've ever had happen.

A few weeks back, during a voter registration event David and I were hosting, we encountered this woman who was mentally disabled. I'm not sure if this was something she was born with or if drug use or some accident caused her brain damage. She informed us that she couldn't register because she was a convicted felon. But she handed me an angel pin and called for God to bless us or something similar. I thought it a nice gesture from someone who wasn't dealt such a good hand in life.

Ok, this isn't even the bizarre part, LOL.

When we packed up for the day, I told David to take the pin since the table, chairs, and leaflets were all his. And that was the last I'd seen of it.

Until this morning.

I just came into our computer room, sat down, and happened to look at the printer shelf attached to the side of my desk. Next to the printer turned upside down was a pin. All I could think was "I don't remember leaving a pin lying there--I wonder what it is."

I turn it over and find it's the angel pin. I begin to wrack my brain trying to figure out how it got there. And I come up with nothing. No plausable explanation. Then I notice that next to it lie a party horn (the kind that unrolls when you blow it) from HD's birthday party in DC and a Dean for America card. None of the three items were located there yesterday.

Is this a sign that the guy upstairs is pushing for Howard to be our next president? Or is he just telling me to keep working hard campaigning? I honestly don't know.

But this does rank as a miracle in my book. :)

Wrapping Waitresses

After shopping for hours yesterday, I wrapped for hours today. And I'm not done. I definitely have too many people to buy for, LOL. Not to mention, I wrapped the gifts from my brother to my niece and nephew. I need to teach that boy how to wrap his own presents. :P

All I want for Christmas

[stream of consciousness]

I officially shopped until I dropped. I spent more money than I even want to think about. But I have most people covered now. I might need a couple small gifts for people at work. And my cousin John. But that's about it.

This is when I realize I have almost too many friends. LOL. I completely spent too much on my niece and nephew. I may hate the crowds, but I do like shopping for other people. I love to find just the right gift for each person.

Now it can snow or ice all it likes...my shopping is about complete.

Me and my sore legs are gonna crawl in my bed now. LOL.

Jingle Bells

Have you finished your Christmas/Holiday shopping yet? I think I've managed to get most of the gifts for my family. But I'm way behind in shopping for my friends. I've been having trouble coming up with unique gift ideas. And I need to find more time to shop.

As for cards, I'll be lucky to get them out at all this year. I meant to write them over Thanksgiving, but I forgot the cards at my home and didn't have them to write while at my parents' house. And between being sick and having lots of meetings/finctions to attend, I've had no time to do them since.

Why is it each year it gets harder and harder to get everything done before Christmas? *sigh*

Happy Birthday to me....

Today I turn 31. And its no big deal. I've been too busy to worry about it. I'm single, I have no children, and I have a good career. And I'm happy. (Well, as happy as I can be under a Bush Administration...but working on the Dean campaign helps, LOL.)

Some people act like I should get cracking and find myself a husband and pop out a few kids. Some married people admire that I have a complete life without that. (They know that married life ain't always what it's cracked up to be, especially if you're not with the right person.)

I wouldn't mind having kids, but I don't know that I'm ready to go the single parent route. Kids are a lot of work. My brother having two has given me an appreciation for that!

As far as I'm concerned I have 10 years to sort all that out. And I have my two furry kids in the meanwhile. LOL.

On this day, I can mark the passing of another year in my life. As I blow out my candles I will have one particular wish that would impact this country. I think you can guess what that wish is. :)

Boycott Walmart

Reading about the bankruptcy of FAO Schwarz made me a bit sad. I don't think I've ever shopped in the New York store, but I have been in the Boston one probably 10 years ago. It's an experience I urge anyone to go experience. Go be a kid again and see this huge fascinating store full of toys. (It was used in the Tom Hanks movie Big.)

Yes, they are a bit expensive compared with discount retailers. But Walmart in particular has been slashing prices on it's toys in cutthroat competition with other retailers. They are selling their toys at a loss in order to get shoppers into their stores. FAO Schwarz doesn't have other items than toys to rely on for their bottom line, while Walmart does.

I have not shopped at Walmart for the most part since college. Only when there is something I can't find elsewhere, do I go to Walmart. And I cringe while doing it. I always find going there is a stressful experience and the staff rarely helpful.

There is a movement afoot to boycott Walmart because of the cutthroat business tactics and because of it's anti-Union activities. I urge everyone to try to use other retailers instead of Walmart this Christmas season and beyond.

Walmart has shown in many smaller communities that once it puts its local competitors out of business, it jacks up it's prices in that community. Do you want such an unscrupulous business in your neighborhood? Especially at the expense of family run single community businesses?

The Dean Connection

A wonderful long Sunday Magazine story from the NYTimes about the magic of the Dean campaign, meetups, and the connection between Dean supporters across the country via the internet. I highly recommend the read.

SARS anyone?

I probably don't have SARS, but I have been sick. Started with bad head cold, fever and moved to stomach bug. Either that or because I wasn't eating much due to the cold, it made my stomach sick, or it's nerves. Been planning a major Dean event in my area in the midst of being sick, so that doesn't help.

So far, I'm still alive.....

Diebold Nightmare

Worried about the next election? Or at least the electronic voting portion? This won't make you feel much better.

School Board member Rita S. Thompson (R), who lost a close race to retain her at-large seat, said yesterday that the new computers might have taken votes from her. Voters in three precincts reported that when they attempted to vote for her, the machines initially displayed an "x" next to her name but then, after a few seconds, the "x" disappeared.

In response to Thompson's complaints, county officials tested one of the machines in question yesterday and discovered that it seemed to subtract a vote for Thompson in about "one out of a hundred tries," said Margaret K. Luca, secretary of the county Board of Elections.

Cough, Cough

I slept a whole lot over the weekend. It was as if I was catching up on a month's worth of sleep. Which was great. But this morning I was still tired. I was like, WTF?

Well, by this afternoon, I started coughing, so that answers my 'WTF?' Sure enough I'm catching a cold. No wonder I felt exhausted.

And unfortunately it's the annoying non-productive dry cough variety. I whipped out a pack of Cold-Eeze in hopes of warding off a full blown cold. I got too much shit to do in the next few weeks.

Except now in trying to find the link to Cold-Eeze, I find a website that says they don't work....hmmmm......
