Malcontent

I've been dabbling a bit with online dating. I did have a very brief date last month, which made me question whether this is feasable to continue. After taking a bit of a break, I've started looking again.

One thing I've noticed is a number of guys want a woman who is "content with her life." I mean I keep seeing this phrase over and over. First off, if a woman was completely content with her life she wouldn't be using an online dating service, LOL. Secondly, wouldn't someone who is content lack goals? I mean shouldn't one always strive to improve themselves and their life?

This phrase just started to irk me after awhile. It's like you need not apply if you are not happy with your job. Or with anything else.

I mean I like who I am, but that doesn't mean I couldn't improve certain aspects of my life. When guys say this, what the hell do they mean?

Targeting Target

Can you believe the crap that is being sent out to smear Target about not allowing the Salvation Army or any other group from soliciting at its doors?

Someone forwarded me this note from a Christian fundy group:

Folks dropping money in Salvation Army kettles at Wal-Mart stores can
make their money go twice as far. The world's largest retailer announced
last Thursday it would match up to $1 million in donations.

The company said the clock started Thursday on the match and runs
through Christmas Eve.

Wal-Mart is helping raise money for needy families, while the Target
Corporation continues to serve as this year's "Ebenezer Scrooge."
Earlier this year, Target told the Salvation Army to "take a hike" with
its red kettles, refusing to allow them to raise much needed funds to
help children this Christmas.

"We hope our customers join us in donating what they can to benefit an
organization that does so much in our communities to serve families in
need," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Betsy Reithemeyer said in a news release.
"The Salvation Army red kettles and the bell ringers are truly a holiday
tradition worth keeping."

The Salvation Army said the kettle donations are spent locally and said
the Wal-Mart match will extend local donations.

I hope you will consider making your Christmas purchases with companies,
like Wal-Mart, who support one of the nation's most beloved charities,
the Salvation Army.

In the meantime, please take a moment to thank Wal-Mart for supporting
the good work of the Salvation Army.

Send your email to Wal-Mart now!

Sincerely,

Don

Donald E. Wildmon, Founder and Chairman
American Family Association

P.S. Please forward this email to family and friends.

Is the "Family" (said with Jersey accent) letting other chain stores know what kind of treatment they will get if they don't fall in line and support Salvation Army?

Really what's happening is Walmart pays off all these Christian charities to win their adoration while it simultaneously pays its workers substandard wages, forbids unions, and provides no health benefits. As far as I'm concerned screwing the employees is a non-christian thing to do. But so long as Walmart is putting money in the coffers, these christian groups look the other way.

Meanwhile, I did the majority of my Christmas shopping at Target with little to no hassle in spite of it being mobbed with holiday shoppers. That's why I love Target.

Additionally, this year instead of supporting Salvation Army, I donated to Toys for Tots. In the end, I'd rather give items that are needed rather than cash that can be diverted elsewhere. (including into someone's pocket)

Choked on a Gobstopper

I don't get a real good feeling from watching the trailer for the Tim Burton version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I like both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp but this just doesn't look right.

Why can't filmakers come up with some fresh material? Aren't there any more recent children's books they can work with? Why mess with something where the original is a one-of-a-kind?

Ashcroft should quit his day job

I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 on Sunday at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring. I hadn't ever read or viewed any of Michael Moore's previous books or films. So I wasn't sure what to expect.

I thought he did a great job of putting the range of footage together (with music) into a coherent two hour package. There were parts to make you angry, parts to make you cry, and parts to make you laugh your ass off to release the tension. Yes, it's tilted to the left, but nothing was inaccurate as far as could tell. Clearly Bush & Co. wouldn't want you to see something so unflattering toward them, so they'd say just about anything they could to stop people from watching it. Yet it did show me that Dubya could speak coherently once....over 20 years ago, LOL.

The most shocking thing: Ashcroft singing....and well!

Everyone should go see this film....and vote in November.

On the third day

At some point in time, I wrote an entry about the movie The Passion of the Christ. (why the 'the'?...I dunno, LOL.) I believe I was fairly supportive of Mel Gibson's right to make such a movie.

But this makes me sick--merchandising. Specifically, crucifixtion nails as jewelry. But not just limited to that. I'm not sure why this has struck such a chord with me, but I just resent the thought of Mr. Ultra-conservative Catholic Mel Gibson trying to make extra bucks off this movie by selling crap like that under the pretext of spreading Christianity, no less. I just think it's so tacky.

The question I have now is, did they sell merchandising to the Ten Commandments back in its day?

Boycott Walmart

Reading about the bankruptcy of FAO Schwarz made me a bit sad. I don't think I've ever shopped in the New York store, but I have been in the Boston one probably 10 years ago. It's an experience I urge anyone to go experience. Go be a kid again and see this huge fascinating store full of toys. (It was used in the Tom Hanks movie Big.)

Yes, they are a bit expensive compared with discount retailers. But Walmart in particular has been slashing prices on it's toys in cutthroat competition with other retailers. They are selling their toys at a loss in order to get shoppers into their stores. FAO Schwarz doesn't have other items than toys to rely on for their bottom line, while Walmart does.

I have not shopped at Walmart for the most part since college. Only when there is something I can't find elsewhere, do I go to Walmart. And I cringe while doing it. I always find going there is a stressful experience and the staff rarely helpful.

There is a movement afoot to boycott Walmart because of the cutthroat business tactics and because of it's anti-Union activities. I urge everyone to try to use other retailers instead of Walmart this Christmas season and beyond.

Walmart has shown in many smaller communities that once it puts its local competitors out of business, it jacks up it's prices in that community. Do you want such an unscrupulous business in your neighborhood? Especially at the expense of family run single community businesses?

Unhappily After

Let's just say I'm skeptical. I believed him to be a golddigger from the start. (On top of the fact he's so obviously gay.) Granted I know Liza's had her problems throughout the years, but this guy knew what he was getting himself into. He's a celebrity promoter afterall.

What a circus!

Another Flop

Looks like the divorce may be final before the much-anticipated wedding ever transpires. Report: Affleck, J-Lo Split Up

Darn. And here I was making bets on how quickly the marriage would end. LOL. I mean J.Lo has a rep to keep.

So since Ben appears to be breaking up with her does that mean she gets to keep the pink diamond engagement ring? ;)

Overworked America

I know I could use more vacation time and so could most of America. How did the land of the free become the land of next to no vacation?

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise

Who didn't see this coming? After all, the whole affair appeared so fake and quite the freakshow...and the groom so apparently gay. Hehehehehe..... The 15 minutes of fame is over.
